Join the Be The Match Registry!

Mitchell Oliveira is 11 years old, goes to Keith Country Day School and can be found playing soccer with the Rockford United or other sports (or of course video games) most days when not in school. He is a fierce competitor and plays to win. He has battled leukemia most of his life and now faces the biggest battle of all: to survive, he needs a bone marrow transplant. First he needs to find a matching donor. Like most people, Mitchell does not have a match in his family and must look to the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match Registry to find a suitable donor. Unfortunately, many people do not find a match, especially people with diverse racial and ethnic heritage. The treatment is available; the match is not.

Help us change that. Join the Be The Match registry online. Right now, we are having an online drive on behalf of Mitchell. Fill out the registration form electronically and mail back the kit to collect your cheek cells in the self-addressed, stamped envelope that is mailed to you when you join online. It’s easy. It’s convenient. And you can be part of a movement to help every patient like Mitchell find their lifesaving match.

Don’t wait. People are searching right now. Go to http://join.marrow.org/matches4life to join Mitchell’s online drive. Use promo code matches4life to get priority tested against Mitchell and to have any contributions help pay for the testing of those who join at this drive. You may also join at any Rock River Valley Blood Center fixed site or mobile drive. Go to www.rrvbc.org to find the locations and hours.

Find out if you can help Mitchell or another patient who needs a marrow cell transplant from an unrelated donor in order to be cured of their life threatening disease like leukemia, lymphoma or sickle cell.

Pass this on to all your friends, family, coworkers and distribution lists and encourage them to join or give financially. Tax-deductible contributions to help pay the costs for people to join the registry can be made to The Red Shoe Run for Donor Awareness, c/o RRVBC, 419 N. 6th St., Rockford, IL 61107.

Call Margaret Shannon, National Marrow Donor Program Recruiter, at 815-961-2341 for more information or to learn how you can help.
